Iron and nutrient testing in Vancouver: your options

You have three routes to iron and nutrient testing in Vancouver: through your family doctor to a public collection site like LifeLabs, through a private at-home service like Numia, or through a private direct-to-consumer company.

They differ on who orders it, where the draw happens, what you pay, how long results take, and how much explanation comes with them. For plenty of people with clear symptoms, the first route is the right starting point and costs nothing, so it's worth knowing how each works before assuming you need to pay.

How the public route works

In BC, publicly funded lab testing begins with a physician or nurse practitioner. If you do not have a family doctor, you will usually need to visit a walk-in clinic or use another primary-care service to discuss your symptoms and request a requisition.

Tests are ordered based on your symptoms, medical history and clinical guidelines. When a test qualifies for coverage under the Laboratory Services Act, the public system pays for it. Tests that do not meet the coverage criteria may not be ordered through MSP or may require payment.

Once you have a requisition, you can visit a collection provider such as LifeLabs during its operating hours. Whether you pay depends on whether each test is publicly covered.
